Patrícia Corrêa

Maria is a video performance from an artistic series with the same name where I question, the product of memory in its transfer from body to body, in context and over time. The Woman presented assumes an anonymity by agglutinating identities which may mirror other “Maria’s”. A narrative for emotional intersections of a body that receives and channels unconscious marks of the Other.

Patrícia Corrêa (b. 1978, Lisbon l Portugal) artist, researcher, and curator. Patrícia studied photography at IADE (Creative University, 2002), graduated in Art History (University of Lisbon, 2007), and pursued her studies in the same area specialising in Contemporary Art (University of Lisbon, 2009). Patrícia works with performance, photography, video, and installation exploring the fragility of the presence of time, using excerpts of life and memories, as a metaphor of an intangible presence. Using different mediums, she builds memory repositories to explore the complexity of memory behaviour itself. Memory as a temporal phenomenon that reverberates hybridity on the body, on the mind, and on external beings and objects. By reframing a given memory with her personal narrative she creates new imagery, a new visual emotion, a new frame for the post visual recollection. Exhibited and performed in public spaces, galleries, festivals, and museums, such as Grimmuseum (Berlin, Germany), City Museum of Lisbon (Portugal), VI Art and Culture Biennial of Sao Tome (Sao Tome and Principe), BU - Performing Arts Festival (Bangkok, Thailand), Circle of Time Performance Festival at CSW Gallery (Toruń, Poland), WAR<SO>VIE performance festival (Warsaw, Poland), CIPAF - International Performance Festival (Nicosia, Cyprus), 3rd edition of Visual Arts Festival (Bielsko-Biała, Poland), Biennial of Performance Art (Bogotá, Colombia) and National Museum of Contemporary Art (Lisbon, Portugal). Based between Brussels (Belgium) and Lisbon, founder & curator of YAM Performance Art Festival and Portuguese Performance Art Platform.

I am a visual artist and social researcher with a focus on performance and live arts. My work is durational, ritualistic, and feminine. Being interdisciplinary, multi-sensory, site, and context responsive spanning from the performance art, to sound video and installation. Working with performance art as, an expanded medium for the poetic signification, I built links between the object significant and the object's significance. Thus, throughout my work, I have been developing projects that, increasingly, focus the spectrum of the poetic realm in the art live. Questions around the body and its place lato sensu are present in my works, especially by the inversion of performance art pillar concepts. At the moment, the core of my artistic research is focused on the complexity of memory behaviour itself. My memories, memories transmitted to me, collective memory, lived times transformed into symbolic images. It is my belief that memories when externalised, are given to the external Other as a visual poem.
